From ambiguous numbers to provable duty-of-care
The recurring problems SSMDE fixes
Problem 1 — Context is lost.
A machine says 36.9, or 4.12, or Status=OK. But compared to what baseline, under whose rulebook, for how long, within which band, and was the sensor already drifting?
Problem 2 — Trust is negotiated later, not encoded now.
After incidents, teams hunt dashboards and emails to reconstruct: who knew what, when, and which threshold applied. That is fragile, political, and slow.
SSMDE solves both at the source.
The meaning (align, band), the policy (manifest_id), the moment (stamp), and the value all travel together inside the record.
What changes with SSMDE
Before. “We think it was OK at the time.”
After. “This record proves it was band="A0" under manifest_id="M1" at <timestamp>, with align near 0.0, and the chain is intact.”
Encoded, not implied.
Instead of relying on memory or private vendor logic, SSMDE encodes duty-of-care in the message:
{
"value": { "reading": 36.9, "unit": "C" },
"align": 0.03,
"band": "A0",
"manifest_id": "M1",
"stamp": "SSMCLOCK1|2025-11-04T13:20:55Z|theta=127.4|sha256=9f...21|prev=7b...c3"
}
What this gives you immediately
# No silent goalpost shifts
band/thresholds are defined in manifest_id
# Comparable, bounded stability
-1 < align < +1, safe to pool/rank
# Verifiable timing and order
stamp encodes when/what/sequence for replay
# Legacy-safe
phi((m,a)) = m # value remains readable for old systems
Fewer arguments, faster alignment
Less manual interpretation.
The receiver does not guess “what OK means” — the record states it.
Less policy drift.
Changing the rulebook requires a new manifest_id. Quiet redefinitions show up.
Independent replay.
Auditors, partners, or insurers can recompute align and verify the stamp chain without vendor permission.
Faster cross-team work.
Operations, safety, audit, and AI can agree on state because they read the same encoded truth.
Why this matters to humans
- Operators get clear bands with time-boxed promises (e.g.,
"CRITICAL" => respond in <= 10 min"). - Auditors/compliance get replayable evidence from the records themselves.
- Insurers/regulators see declared policy + observed state + timing in one place.
- AI systems consume bounded, comparable
alignsignals — less noise, fewer false spikes. - Everyone avoids post-incident politics: the truth is in the record.
